Renovation work of the Vairavar Kovil road in the 2nd cross street of Vavuniya commenced in October 2017. It is nearly 200 meters and comes under the purview of the Vavuniya Urban Council. The contractor who won the bid did not continue the work. The work was merely commenced, and no progress was made thereafter. TISL’s Vavuniya office is situated on the same road. The clients who visit the office had difficulty in entering the office as the side canals were open and debris were around the road as well as in front of the gate. The situation continued till January 2018.
With this backdrop, Ms. Vinothine, the project assistant, TISL Vavuniya, made a humble request to the workers to clean the gate area so that the clients can enter the office without much difficulty. But the workers yelled at her and refused her request. Then, on the same day (23rd January 2018), she filed an RTI request to the Urban Council requesting the information about the contractor and the details of contract via post.
Even before she received the acknowledgement, the contractor expedited the works from the next day. There were four backhoes and many laborers on the road. Initially they cleared the entrance of the office as well as the other households. Then they completed the other work. Now the road works have been completed.
